National Adoption Month
This November marks the 25th anniversary of National Adoption Month. The 30-day campaign raises nationwide awareness about the need for adoptive families for children and youth in the foster care system. Spearheading the initiative are the Children’s Bureau and its partners, AdoptUSKids and Child Welfare Information Gateway.
Children’s Bureau’s newest theme, “Engage Youth: Listen and Learn,” emphasizes the importance of teenage adoption. Teenagers in foster care are less likely to be adopted than their younger, elementary-aged peers. The lack of families willing to adopt older children increases teens’ risk of aging out of foster care and entering into premature adulthood without the love and support of a stable home.
Research shows that teenagers’ long-term health, well-being, and overall life success is heavily dependent on a supportive family structure.
