Did You Know… There Is A Difference Between a State of Emergency and a State of Major Disaster?

It’s in the news all the time  – “The President has declared a state of emergency…,” but did you know there are varying degrees in those declarations?

A declaration is made when a state Governor submits a request to the President, and the type of declaration made can have legal implications in what federal assistance is available to that region as defined by the Stafford Act which sets the standard for such instances.

When a region is under a state of major disaster, there are typically more options in the assistance provided by the Federal Government than when a state of emergency is declared.
