A codicil is a written change to an existing will. The advantage of modifying a will by use of a codicil is that the existing will still stands and the codicil updates only the particular terms outlined. Many people add a codicil to make a change to an executor, update guardians of minor children or add a beneficiary. As with the original will, a codicil must be dated, signed and witnessed.
