With school back in session, many young adults are starting their first year of college. While this is an exciting time for students and families, it is important to ensure that you have access to your children’s health information while they are away. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule prohibits anyone from accessing your personal health information. This means, in the event of an accident, a doctor cannot disclose a student’s health information, even to the student’s family, without prior written permission. Before your child leaves home, if he or she is 18 or older, be sure to fill out a HIPAA Release Form. This will allow you to communicate with the doctor regarding any health issues that your child may experience while away from home.
